RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2018
Following on from the success at last years RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, NT Killingley are pleased to announce that the Hard Landscaping and Soft Landscaping departments have been chosen to build two feature gardens for the Royal Horticultural Society at the 2018 show.
New to RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in 2018, the Long Border Competition provides the opportunity for plant enthusiasts of all backgrounds, including students, garden designers, community groups and talented individuals, to experience the design, planning and build of a horticultural exhibit in a show environment, without the large financial and resource commitment of a Show Garden.
The competition takes its inspiration from the Long Borders at great gardens, including Haddon Hall, RHS Garden Wisley, Great Dixter and Hever Castle, as well as the pioneering work of Gertrude Jekyll. NT Killingley is supplying and constructing the pre-cut and treated softwood timber sleeper planters for the project.
The other project that NT Killingley are delighted to be involved in is the Living Laboratory, designed by RHS Landscape Architect Dave Green. The important role plants play within the city will be explored in the new
Living Laboratory, showcasing some of the great ways plants can help both now and in the future as urban living intensifies. Plants and technology will be on display highlighting how different varieties can help address a number of urban challenges including pollution, flooding and food scarcity. With urban areas generally being dense, fast-paced environments predominantly made of sealed surfaces with vegetation areas diminishing, it is difficult to understand how the slower cycles of nature and gardening fit in. The Living Laboratory showcases how plants and gardening can be integrated into the urban environment to provide us with environmental and health benefits and tackle many of the key issues presented by living in intensive environments.
The five themed zones: food, flooding, pollution, exercise and well-being will all show how plants can be used and the environmental and health benefits they bring to urban living. All the zones in the lab are based on research and gardening practices currently being undertaken by the RHS and its collaborators and all include great ideas that visitors can implement in their own gardens both now and in the future.
