Centenary Square Welcomes its New Birches

The first phase of tree planting at Centenary Square in Birmingham is complete with 17 Betula Pendula's (Silver Birches) spanning the entrance of the development.

The delivery and movement of the trees on site presented a few challenges to the soft landscaping team.  With tight restrictions on the use of plant at the site the team were unable to mobilise a crane which would be normal practice when offloading trees through the lorry roof. With some skilful Telehandler operation, all the trees were carefully removed from the delivery vehicle and put into place.

The project that is due to be completed in Summer 2019 will see a total of 55 mature trees planted by NT Killingley including:

  • 12 x Prunus Avium Plena (Wild Cherry)

  • 14 x Acer Rubrum Sun Valley (Red Maple)

  • 12 x Ginko Biloba (Maidenhair Tree)

  • 17 x Betula Pendula (Silver Birch)

The redevelopment of Centenary Square will provide new public space and a setting for some of the city’s most iconic public buildings along with the planned £700m of new developments in the Paradise scheme.
